Accessible Ways to Experience the Red River Gorge

The Red River Gorge is known for its rugged cliffs, scenic overlooks, and incredible hiking opportunities. While many of the trails throughout the Gorge can be challenging, there are still several ways for visitors with mobility limitations, wheelchairs, or other disabilities to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and rock formations. With accessible paths, scenic overlooks, and unique attractions, everyone can experience the natural wonder of the Red River Gorge.

Natural Bridge State Park

One of the most accessible spots in the area is the Natural Bridge State Park. The park offers paved and relatively flat areas near the lodge and visitor facilities where guests can enjoy forest views and peaceful surroundings. Several overlooks and picnic areas are also accessible, making it easy to relax and take in the scenery without needing to hike steep terrain.

For those wanting to experience the incredible views from the top of the famous natural sandstone arch, the Natural Bridge Skylift is an excellent option. The Skylift provides a smooth ride up the ridge to the top of Natural Bridge, allowing visitors to enjoy one of the most iconic views in Kentucky without hiking the steep trails to the top. Once at the bridge, there are viewing areas where guests can admire the breathtaking cliffs and forested valleys that make the Gorge so special.

Hiking in the Gorge

Another great place to visit is the Sky Bridge. The area features a short, relatively level path leading to scenic views of the surrounding cliffs and forest. While some of the nearby trails include stairs, the immediate overlook area provides beautiful scenery that many visitors can access more easily than other parts of the Gorge.

Chimney Top Trail and the Princess Arch Trail are two other trails that are generally manageable for those with limited mobility. Chimney Top Trail is a relatively flat dirt trail and partially paved that takes about 30 minutes to an hour to hike. At the top, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the valley below and steep cliffs from afar. The Princess Arch Trail is another easy trail that takes about 30 minutes to hike near the Chimney Top Trail and along the tail, hikers will be rewarded with visiting the Princess Arch which is a breathtaking natural sandstone archway.

Visitors can also enjoy scenic drives throughout the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway. This route winds through some of the most picturesque parts of the area, with numerous pull-offs and overlooks where travelers can stop, take photos, and enjoy the views without leaving their vehicle for long hikes.
